WHAT IS PRINTMAKING

We are all familiar with commercial printing such as books, posters, fabrics and wallpaper. However, most of us do not know much about the history of printmaking and the ancient and modern methods embraced by fine artists over millennia.

The earliest known example of printmaking, a hand-printed woodblock on silk, dates back to the Han Dynasty China around 206 BC to 220 AD. The first print on paper was made in China during the 7th century. The original form of printmaking used a small wood board which was carved, inked and hand printed.

Today we use a variety of surfaces to create fine art prints. Artists have produced limited, hand-made prints to make their art more affordable, and consequentially make it available to a greater audience. There is another appeal to printmaking—a very personal one. Printmakers are challenged by the medium and it’s inevitable unpredictability. Pesistence is a necessity for this art form.

Linoleum and Woodcut Printing, Dry Point, Etching, Stone Lithography, Monotype, Serograph, Collagraph, Solarplate Etching and Cyanotype are among the printmaking methods popular today. We gratefully acknowledge those artists who have made printmaking an exciting and collectable art form—from Japan’s Katsushika Hokusai to Albrecht Durer, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol, to name a few. You can find a description of printmaking techniques on the LEARN MORE page found in our website menu.

Acquiring fine art prints is an affordable way to start collecting art. Please contact our artists directly if you are interested in a work of art. They are happy to help you.
